Custard Bread Pudding

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups cubed white bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C).
  2. Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish and set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, add the cubed bread and set aside.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, beat the eggs until frothy.
  5. Add the milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the eggs and mix well.
  6. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and stir until all of the bread is coated.
  7. Add the raisins (if using) and mix well.
  8. Let the custard mixture sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
  9. Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  10. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  11. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Additional Notes:

  • This dish can be served warm or at room temperature, topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
